Librarians, we have a manga…

Sep 08 2010 Published by under Books, Librarians, Present, Weird

A few days ago the manga Library Wars: Love & War came across my desk at work. And yes, librarians are the heroes and we are armed to the teeth.

The manga is based on the light novel series Toshokan Senso by Hiro Arikawa. The novels also gave rise to another manga, an internet radio series and an anime series.

What are we fighting for? Well, what have we always fought for?

In the near future, the federal government creates a committee to rid society of books it deems unsuitable. The libraries vow to protect their collections, and with the help of local governments, form a military group to defend themselves–the Library Forces!

Check it out, I’m sure you will enjoy it. Meanwhile, I’m off to brush up on my rappelling, just in case…

Update (Sept 9, 2010): A review of the manga by librarian LeAnn Suchy is available at Minnesota Reads. Thanks LeAnn for passing this along!

About the (Censored) W. (Censored) Presidential Center

Wasn’t this guy’s wife a librarian? I wonder what she has to say about all the censorship.

Maybe a different design for the library would have helped…

Are you too talented to be a librarian?

Jul 15 2008 Published by under Librarians, Present, Weird

Dancer During my travels I came across the following postcard from the Creative Trust. I’m not quite sure what the message is, but it seems to be that talented people are trapped in stifling library careers and need to be set free (the back of the card says “With your help, our artists can devote themselves to what they do best”). Anyone else have any thoughts?

And don’t try this move in the stacks. Far too dangerous (and creative) for a librarian.

Bacon=Bookmark

Jun 24 2008 Published by under Books, Present, Weird

Has the phone ever rung when you’ve been reading a book over breakfast and, looking around for a convenient bookmark, you picked up a piece of bacon from your plate and slipped it between the pages? No? Well someone did…

Abebooks has an interesting article about all the valuable, interesting and weird things that people have found in second-hand books.
